Workshop prepares for Alaska’s next big earthquake

The TVis hosting a first-of-its-kind workshop for agencies and organizations that prepare for or respond to Alaska’s earthquakes.

This meeting will allow scientists, policymakers, engineers, emergency responders and communications technology experts to compare issues and map out strategies for Alaska.

“We will have a better-defined understanding of what we should expect with an earthquake and what steps to take to save life and property,” said Mike West, director of the Alaska Earthquake Center and state seismologist.

About 50 people are expected to attend the limited-invitation event, called “Alaska’s Next Big Earthquake.”

The meeting will be held Nov. 12-13 on the Fairbanks campus.

The Alaska Earthquake Center, which is part of the TV Geophysical Institute, organized the meeting. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Alaska Seismic Hazards Safety Commission also are sponsors.
