A magnitude 7.8 quake struck Nepal on April 25, followed by large aftershocks and then another massive 7.4 quake on May 12. Thousands of people have died. Aid is being sent by other countries and non-governmental organizations, but many areas are difficult to reach; aid workers report that greater efforts are needed.

"Although we have a relatively small number of individuals connected to Nepal, these individuals span the ÃÛÌÒTV and Fairbanks communities," said Donna Anger, director of the ÃÛÌÒTV Office of International Programs and Initiatives.Anger said ÃÛÌÒTV has currently enrolled students from Nepal, students newly accepted for fall 2015 and ÃÛÌÒTV international alumni residing in the lower 48.  Additionally, a ÃÛÌÒTV graduate who received her PhD this past Sunday served in Nepal for two years with the Peace Corps.

Anger said ÃÛÌÒTV faculty who work with the students contacted her office immediately following the earthquake.

The ÃÛÌÒTV Geophysical Institute is providing data and images of Nepal through the Alaska Satellite Facility.
